What are MP3s?

MP3s are digital audio files that maintain their original sound quality while keeping a smaller file size.  But on a 56K modem, most MP3s can download in just a few minutes (rather than hours!). MP3s are widely recognized as the most popular format for storing and listening to music on the on the internet.

Why are they called MP3s?
 
MP3 is short for MPEG Audio Layer 3.  MPEG refers to the Moving Pictures Experts Group, an organization that sets international standards for digital formats for audio and video. The file-shrinking technology itself was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.

What's the big deal about MP3s?

MP3s are one of the most exciting developments in the history of recorded music.  There are a few reasons for this:

• They're easily accessible. MP3s are ideal for Internet distribution because they sound great, they download in a jiffy and there are plenty available online.

• You can create your own MP3s.  With some easy to use computer software, anyone can create MP3 files from their existing audio CDs.  This type of software is called a "CD Ripper" which you can download from here.

• There are portable MP3 players smaller than the old Walkmans and Discmans. Most portable MP3 players, such as the Rio, are about one-third the size of a Sony Discman and hardly ever skip.

• Music on Demand. For music fans, MP3s have become a symbol of total user freedom unveiling a whole new world of music delivery.

• The chosen one. Unlike other proprietary formats such as Windows Media Audio, Liquid Audio, MP3 is an open standard.  Essentially, this means that no one corporation controls it.  For this reason, there are more MP3 listeners, software programs, and hardware devices than any other CD-quality digital audio format in the world.

How do I get started with the MP3 scene?

To start playing MP3s, you will need an audio player.  Such players include Winamp and Windows Media Player (which is bundled with Windows).
 

How do I convert MP3s to WAVs or my WAVs to MP3s?
